Schlumberger Cambridge Research is a distinctive marquee-like structure dominating the High Cross site on the western outskirts of Cambridge, England. This spectacular building was completed in 1985 and the smaller second phase was opened in 1992. It has recently been classified as a Grade II listed building. Altogether, there are more than 930 m2; of laboratory space and offices for more than 100 scientists, technicians and domain experts.
Job Summary:
You will be part of a multi-disciplinary team who are advancing the area of energy storage automation by conducting applied research in control, optimisation, estimation, mathematical modelling, and data analytics. Our team works on topics related to designing, characterising, and automating energy storage systems, e.g., batteries or hydrogen electrolysers for producing green hydrogen.
Your role will be to work with one or more research scientists helping to develop automation algorithms for grid or microgrid-connected batteries (implemented as battery management systems or energy management systems) to improve their reliability and longevity.
Your work will involve literature review to understand the limitations of the current approaches for battery and energy management systems, simulation study to compare the novel approaches with the state-of-the-art, and possibly, testing the algorithm in our experimental set-up.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties:
Learn about battery systems modelling
Develop algorithms for battery management systems automation
Support scientists on algorithm development, simulation and experimental study
Present work to the local team, as well as the business and engineering
Competencies:
Required skills:
Passionate interest in control engineering
Good knowledge of Matlab
System dynamics modelling
Willingness to learn
Good communication skills
Exposure to any of the following would be a plus:
Model predictive control
Optimisation algorithms
Energy storage systems
Qualification:
Studying towards a Bachelors or Masters in Control Engineering or a related field.
