Our SIP unpaid program provides a practical experience to students interested in working in a clinical setting with dialysis patients. Here are some of the areas that you may encounter and/or observe during your internship - according to your state specific regulations for dialysis:

SIP Program Requirements:

You must be currently enrolled full-time in an accredited medical assistant, certified nursing assistant, or dialysis technician program. **

Comfort with receiving comprehensive training in blood, inserting catheters, and be exposed to blood and other bodily fluids.

Possess the ability to take responsibility, follow procedures, and interact well with other others.

Interns who will be successful are those who want to make a positive difference with people who depend on kidney dialysis healthcare treatment.

Direct Patient Care:

Receive patient into treatment area; weigh patient, take temperature and blood pressure pre- and post-dialysis

Perform vital signs

Review dialysis prescription, note general physical and mental condition of patient through observation and interview, obtain information and/or data to determine compliance to dietary or medication regimen

Recommend a dialysis plan for ultrafiltration to RN, monitor patient vital signs

Equipment Care / Handling:

Set up and monitor dialysis machines and systems

Monitor dialysis machines for correct functioning

Tear down dialysis machines, sterilize and disinfect dialysis machines and equipment according to DaVita procedures

Team / Oversight:

Receive supervised mentoring and guidance - focusing on the comfort and safety of each patient.

Work with a professional team of clinicians in dialysis patient care or biomedical equipment technology to include Dialysis Technicians, Social Workers, Dietitians and DaVita Leaders.

Upon successful completion of your internship and program of study, you and your SIP Mentor can discuss the options for working as a PCT at DaVita.
